Ambient intelligence (AmI) refers to environments that are sensitive, adaptive, and responsive to human presence and needs. By weaving AI, sensors, energy-harvesting technologies and computing into everyday surroundings, AmI systems act proactively, rather than waiting for commands, to make spaces like homes and workplaces more efficient and user-centric. By anticipating our needs, leveraging artificial intelligence (AI), and capturing and processing data through sensors, processors, and actuators, which are unobtrusively embedded throughout the environment, ambient systems provide seamless, connected, and uninterrupted everyday experiences that require minimal user intervention.

6G systems must be designed to meet these demands, providing seamless access to intelligent features from any point within the networks. But achieving ambient intelligence requires maintaining specific quality of service standards to meet key performance indicators such as latency, data rate, reliability, and availability. This edited book addresses the challenges of effectively integrating ambient intelligence into 6G networks, as well as emerging and recent developments, advances, and future directions.

Researchers from academia and industry working in communication engineering, sensing and embedded systems, with a focus on 5G/6G, and ambient intelligence, will find this reference most useful. It will also be of interest as recommended reading to lecturers and postgraduate students in wireless communication, sensing, electronics and computer science.

About the Editors

Muhammad Ali Jamshed is a technology specialist and knowledge exchange associate in next generation communication systems at the College of Science and Engineering, University of Glasgow, UK, where he is co-managing a £3.5 M IAA EPSRC grant. He is also affiliated with the University of Sussex as a visiting research fellow. He is endorsed by the Royal Academy of Engineering under the exceptional talent category. He is a senior member of the IEEE.

Muhammad Ali Imran is head of the James Watt School of Engineering, a professor of Communication Systems, dean of the Transnational Engineering Education (Autonomous Systems & Connectivity), dean of Graduate Studies (Science & Engineering College Senior Management), and head of the Communications, Sensing and Imaging Group (110+ researchers) at the University of Glasgow, UK. He has led a number of multimillion-funded international research projects encompassing the areas of sensor networks, self-organising cellular networks, energy efficiency, and fundamental performance limits.

Masood Ur Rehman is an associate professor at the James Watt School of Engineering, University of Glasgow, UK. He has authored and co-authored 5 books, 8 book chapters and 180+ technical articles in leading journals and peer reviewed conferences, and is editor or associate editor for several prominent journals. He is a fellow of the Higher Education Academy (UK), a senior member of IEEE, a member of the IET and BioEM.
