Computational Electromagnetics for Metamaterial Modelling
Electromagnetic metamaterials are a class of artificial media that exhibit electromagnetic properties not found in naturally occurring materials. The field of metamaterials has advanced rapidly, driven by theoretical and experimental investigations conducted predominantly in the optical field. Subsequent progress in microwave and terahertz component design has further accelerated this development, and numerous applications have since emerged in antenna engineering and electromagnetic compatibility. As a result, there is a strong demand for accurate and computationally efficient numerical techniques that support the design of electromagnetic devices incorporating metamaterials while ensuring satisfactory performance and reliability.
This book is organised around three objectives. Firstly, it introduces the principal computational methods for electromagnetic field analysis and explains their fundamental principles together with selected practical guidance to avoid modelling errors. Secondly, it presents recently developed techniques for the efficient analysis of metamaterial structures. Thirdly, it offers concrete examples of how computational methods may be appropriately incorporated into the design and analysis of metamaterial devices.
Computational Electromagnetics for Metamaterial Modelling offers a systematic and practical guide to using advanced computational and mathematical techniques to model metamaterials. It will be of value to researchers in the field of electromagnetics and to those with an interest in electronic and magnetic materials and metamaterials.
About the Author
Toru Uno is professor emeritus at Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology, Tokyo, Japan. His research interests include electromagnetic inverse problems, computational electromagnetics, and electromagnetic compatibility. Dr Uno is a fellow of the Institute of Electronics, Information and Communications Engineers (IEICE). He is the author of four books and six book chapters on electromagnetic theory, antennas, and computational electromagnetics. In recognition of the activities associated with this achievement, he received the Distinguished Educational Practitioners Award from IEICE in 2023.
Naobumi Michishita is an associate professor in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the National Defense Academy, Japan. His research interests include metamaterial antenna and electromagnetic analysis. He is a member of the Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers (IEICE), Japan. He is also a member of the Japan Society for Simulation Technology and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).
Takuji Arima is an associate professor in the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, TUAT, and also a part-time researcher at the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology, Tokyo, Japan. His research interests include computational electromagnetic and metamaterials. Dr Arima received the Young Scientist Award from the IEEE Antennas and Propagation Society Japan Chapter.
