The EMC pocket guide contains the essential topics and reference materials in EMC that should always be at the fingertips (or in a pocket) of an EMC engineer. It provides guidelines on the theory of EMC, the practical aspects of product design for compliance and how to approach an EMI failure with a few basic troubleshooting techniques to determine the root cause. The guide contains a full glossary and list of formulae. It is not intended to go too deeply into individual topics but to cover the topic adequately enough to lower the risk for compliance failure.
This newly-revised Second Edition is now printed in color and has had all content reviewed and reference material updated. In addition, material on several topics, including real-time spectrum analysis and near-field and far-field shielding has been added.
About the Author
Kenneth Wyatt is principal consultant of Wyatt Technical Services LLC and served as senior technical editor for three years for Interference Technology Magazine from 2016 through 2018. He has worked in the field of EMC engineering for over 35 years with a specialty in EMI troubleshooting and pre-compliance testing. He is a co-author of the popular EMC Pocket Guide and RFI Radio Frequency Interference Pocket Guide. He also co-authored the book with Patrick André, EMI Troubleshooting Cookbook for Product Designers, with foreword by Henry Ott. He recently completed and released a three-volume "EMC Troubleshooting Trilogy", which is now available through Amazon. He is widely published and has authored a monthly column, "Practical EMC", for the Signal Integrity Journal, has blogged for EDN.com and Interference Technology Magazine for many years, and continues to write a monthly column, “EMC Bench Notes”, for In Compliance Magazine and EEWorld. Ken is a senior life member of the IEEE and a longtime member of the EMC Society. He holds an amateur radio license (WA6TTY) from the FCC. Randy J. Jost is currently an adjunct professor at Utah State University, Logan, UT, USA. He received his BSEE, MSEE, and PhD in electrical engineering from the University of Missouri-Columbia. He has worked in RF and EMC related fields for over 40 years, including ten years at Ball Aerospace and Technologies Incorporated, as a staff consultant in RF and microwave engineering, and head of the EMC Group at Ball Aerospace until his retirement in 2021. He is a Senior Life Member of the IEEE and is active in several IEEE societies, including the Electromagnetic Compatibility Society, where he has served on the board of directors and as the chapter chair of several EMC chapters. Dr. Jost is a senior member of the Antenna Measurement Techniques Association, where he served a term on the board of directors. He is a member of the Association of Old Crows and SPIE. He holds iNARTE certifications in EMC Engineer and Spectrum Management, and has both commercial and amateur (N8NAZ) radio licenses from the FCC.
