Frequency Diverse Array Radar Signal Processing
Frequency diverse array (FDA) radar is a hot topic among the scientific and industrial communities in the fields of radar and signal processing, due to the advent of new and advanced active array architectures with multiple transmit and receive channels, high-speed and off-the-shelf processors, arbitrary digital waveform generators, and solid-state transmitters.
This book provides an overview of FDA radar signal processing algorithms and covers some of the most challenging application fields, including adaptive target detection and multi-dimensional parameter estimation, mainlobe deceptive jammer suppression, range-ambiguous clutter suppression, robust design against spectrum congestion and target steering vector mismatch, high-resolution and wide-swath imaging (HRWS) synthetic aperture radar (SAR), etc., exploiting array architectures such as multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) configuration. Innovative and sophisticated tools from optimization theory such as gradient projection, coordinate descent, semidefinite relaxation, fractional programming, Dinkelbach's procedure, maximum block improvement (MBI), iterative approximation, and majorization-minimization are framed in the context of FDA signal processing.
The book balances a practical point of view with a rigorous mathematical approach corroborated by a wealth of numerical case studies. Additionally, the book has a cross-disciplinary approach because it tries to exploit cross-fertilization with recent research and discoveries in optimization theory and statistical signal processing. The material of the book is organized into nine chapters, each completed by an extensive list of references.

About the Editors
Lan Lan is a professor at the National Key Laboratory of Radar Signal Processing, Xidian University, China. Her research interests include frequency diverse array radar, MIMO radar, target detection, and intelligent information processing. Dr Lan was elected for the Excellent Youth Fund of NSFC, the Youth Elite Scientist Sponsorship Program, as well as the URSI Young Scientists Award. She is the member of AESS RSP and SPS SAM TC and is on the editorial boards of IEEE Trans. SP/AES/VT.
Augusto Aubry is an associate professor at the University of Naples Federico II, Italy. His research interests include statistical signal processing and optimization theory, with emphasis on MIMO communications and radar signal processing. Dr Aubry was the recipient of the 2022 IEEE Fred Nathanson Memorial Award as the young AESS Radar Engineer 2022, with the following citation "For outstanding contributions to the application of modern optimization theory to radar waveform design and adaptive signal processing".
Antonio De Maio is a professor at the University of Naples Federico II, Italy. His research interest lies in the field of statistical signal processing, with emphasis on radar detection, optimization theory applied to radar signal processing, and multiple-access communications. He received the 2024 IEEE Warren White Award for outstanding achievements due to a major technical advance (or series of advances) in the art of radar engineering. He is a fellow of the IEEE.
Massimo Rosamilia is an assistant professor at the University of Naples Federico II, Italy. His research interest lies in the field of statistical signal processing, with emphasis on radar signal processing. In 2023, he co-authored the paper winning the SET Panel Best Paper Award (Young Scientist) at the NATO SET-319 Specialists' Meeting on "New Mathematical Frontiers for Multi-Dimensional Radar Systems." He is also the recipient of the 2023 GTTI PhD award for PhD Theses in the field of Communication Technologies. He is currently serving as associate editor of the IEEE Aerospace and Electronic Systems Magazine.
