Grid-Forming Converters in Modern Power Systems

Grid-Forming Converters in Modern Power Systems

Modeling, control and integration

Edited by Ghazala Shafique, Frédéric Colas, Xavier Guillaud

Grid-forming converters are advanced power electronic devices which support voltage and frequency control in electrical grids. They offer several substantial benefits: improving resilience by counteracting voltage and frequency inconsistencies during faults and disturbances, enabling better integration of renewables and storage devices by stabilising systems with large numbers of inverter-based resources, and restarting grids after blackouts without depending on conventional non-renewable energy sources. Thanks to these properties, transmission system operators are pushing for their integration into power system all over the world. Understanding how to model, control and integrate grid-forming converters is therefore an increasingly important requirement for operators and engineers in the power electronics and power systems fields.

The aim of this book is to propose a coherent, rigorous, and progressive analysis of grid-forming control. Although this book focuses primarily on power electronic converter modelling and control, it demonstrates that a solid understanding of power systems is essential for designing converter controls and facilitating the integration of converters into the power system. Conversely, the progressive approach adopted in this book helps readers from the power system community better grasp the fundamentals of power electronic converters. Through this dual perspective, the book aims to build a bridge between the power electronics and power systems communities.

Initial chapters cover the principles behind grid-forming control, limitations and stability. The book then goes on to explore how grid-forming converters are applied in practice, including for wind turbines and storage, and HVDC links. A final part examines the influence of grid-forming control on the dynamics of the power system to which the converter is connected, through small-signal and impedance-based stability analysis. Eight substantial appendices provide supplementary material to help readers understand and implement the concepts presented.

Grid-Forming Converters in Modern Power Systems: Modeling, control and integration is written primarily for operators of power grids, researchers studying power converters in industry and academic settings, and designers and manufacturers of renewable power sources and converters. The book should also be a valuable resource for students looking to expand their knowledge of modern power systems.
