Microstrip and Printed Antenna Design, 4th Edition

Microstrip and Printed Antenna Design, 4th Edition

by Randy Bancroft

This thoroughly updated fourth edition of the widely-used book Microstrip and Printed Antenna Design covers all types of printed microstrip antenna design, from rectangular to circular, broadband to dual band, and millimeter wave microstrip antenna to microstrip arrays. Microstrip series fed and grid arrays are related for use in millimeter-wave applications. This new edition is now structured in two parts: Part I covers traditional microstrip antenna geometries, then Part II provides an expanded treatment of printed antennas.

Microstrip and Printed Antenna Design, 4th Edition features innovative analysis of rectangular microstrip antenna efficiency, and surface wave phenomena when dielectric cover is introduced into the design. The book explores the relationship between dielectric loss from an optimum thickness dielectric cover, evaluates the losses experienced when placing a dielectric radome on a rectangular microstrip antenna, and shows how this phenomenon varies for different metals. The design of magneto-dielectric microstrip antennas is detailed with a design example and experimental data.

The author introduces a better design option for a single feed circularly polarized rectangular patch antenna, further expands on the design of series fed microstrip antenna arrays and addresses the increase of the impedance bandwidth of this design. He also explores series fed linearly polarized arrays along with a circularly polarized array at millimeter wave frequencies, as well as grid array antenna design for millimeter wave antennas. The author also examines the design of rectennas along with the essential microwave components required to produce a successful and elegant design.

Coverage of electrically small antenna design and analysis has been expanded for the new edition, and the design and analysis of an electrically small, loaded loop antenna which produces an electrically small design with a cartiod pattern are presented. The appendices have been enlarged to address the computation of surface impedance given surface roughness for the gradient model.

Written with commercial applications in mind, this comprehensive reference is authored by an experienced consulting engineer who has implemented all design concepts and technologies featured in the book. Practicing antenna engineers and designers in industry and research settings will find this a succinct and approachable handbook that provides useful, practical, simple, and manufacturable antenna designs.
