Heart disease, including coronary artery disease (CAD) and valvular heart disease (VHD), is the leading cause of mortality and morbidity in the world. Early diagnosis is important to prevent further development of the disease. Whilst standard diagnosis methods can be highly costly and invasive, by analysing heart murmur sounds via a phonocardiogram (PCG), patterns in the heart sound characteristics can be readily detected. The intensity, timing, and duration of the heart's sounds can correspond to murmurs, valvular issues, or congenital heart defects. Sounds are recorded using electronic stethoscopes to detect abnormalities not audible to the human ear. This technology is unique in its ability to be deployed in remote and underserved areas to aid in the timely diagnosis of heart diseases.

About the Author

Goutam Saha is professor-in-charge of the Audio and Biosignal Processing Laboratory, Department of Electronics and Electrical Communication Engineering, at the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, India. His field of research is in heart and lung sound analysis, earning the DST-Lockheed Martin India Innovation Growth Program award. His contributions to audio and speech processing helped to develop voice-based biometrics and spoofing countermeasures. He has led over 25 government- and industry-funded projects, co-authored two engineering textbooks, and developed multiple online courses and virtual labs.

Professor Yue Rong is a professor in the School of Electrical Engineering, Computing and Mathematical Sciences at Curtin University, Australia. He has over 20 years' experience in signal processing, wireless communications and biomedical engineering. His research interests include biomedical engineering, signal processing for communications, machine learning, and speech recognition. He has contributed to signal processing and machine learning algorithms for pre-screening cardiovascular disease. He has over 230 publications in journals and conference proceedings.
