Marine areas offer substantial wind and solar resources, with the additional advantage of avoiding local acceptance challenges. The power generated from offshore and floating wind and solar farms needs to be managed, transported and connected to the shoreside grids, with an eye on power quality and the supply of system support services. This requires both power electronics equipment, as well as storage units, installed in proximity to the offshore generation, on artificial islands. Several organisations are currently planning or developing such offshore energy hubs, artificial islands or floating structures, offering wind energy distribution connections, housing power electronics, HV connectors, spare parts and repair facilities, as well as storage units or electrolysers.

This book offers an overview of offshore power hub technologies. Focusing on the North and Baltic Seas and also the US, individual chapters cover the civil works, hub topologies, renewable generation and system support services, storage and hydrogen technologies, HVAC and HVDC infrastructure, stability of offshore multi-energy systems, black start capability from offshore wind, economic and policy aspects for multinational projects, and future challenges.

About the Editors

Damian Flynn is an associate professor in the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at University College Dublin, Ireland. His research interests include power system analysis and control, renewables integration into electrical networks, and energy system modelling informed policy. He has been involved in numerous large European and national research projects, and he is active in various international collaborations, including IEA Wind Task 25/63 and EERA Energy System Integration. He is also a board member of various power and energy system focussed journals.

Nicolaos Cutululis is a professor in the Wind and Energy Systems Department of the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), heading the Power Systems section. His research is in the broad area of integration of wind power, HVDC transmission, offshore grids and electrical infrastructure. He has research experience with large European, Nordic and national projects and is active in international collaborations, including Global Power System Transformation Consortium and IEA Wind Task 25. He furthermore serves as EiC and board member of wind-power related journals.
