A key aspect of energy system transformation is the transition from dependence on fossil fuels to using cleaner energy sources. The energy system that delivers this change will need a new architecture and will use new technologies; it will need to be digitally enabled and optimised for affordability, sustainability and resilience. The interactions, interdependencies and trade-offs between and amongst all parts of the energy system must be fully understood and managed. Planning and implementing this substantial change successfully will require a holistic, synergetic approach.

A synergetic energy system is one in which all components work together in a highly coordinated, mutually reinforcing way to optimise performance, efficiency, resilience, and sustainability. The ambition is to improve the overall efficiency of the energy system, cut greenhouse gas emissions, reduce resilience risks, and deliver affordable services for all.

This book provides a synergetic perspective on energy system transformation, with particular focus on energy storage and demand-side management (DSM) as two key drivers and enablers of change. By combining different storage solutions - such as batteries, flywheels, hydrogen, and thermal energy - with DSM measures tailored for industries, cities, and buildings, this approach can reduce dependence on external power imports and support integration of distributed intermittent clean generation.

Offering a nuanced understanding of the complex interactions between generation, transmission, distribution, and consumption, and bringing together diverse perspectives on the development of synergetic energy systems, this book aims to provide readers with breadth and depth of understanding. Through practical case studies from several countries, readers gain insights into how integrated energy systems can harness excess low-carbon energy, store it in multiple forms, and convert it into diverse types of energy to meet dynamic demands.

About the Editors

Priya Bhagavathy (CEng) is an R&D team leader at the University of Strathclyde's Power Networks Demonstration Centre, UK. She is also an EPSRC Clean Energy Strategic Advisory member and an Oxford Martin Fellow. With 20 years spanning power systems, energy policy, and digital infrastructure, her work focuses on whole-systems innovation and energy vector integration. An IET Innovation Award winner who has directed over £60M in collaborative research portfolios, Priya bridges academic rigor and industry application to drive net-zero transformation.

Eric Brown is a professor of practice in energy systems at the University of Strathclyde, UK. He is also an independent consultant in energy systems, working through his company Grid Scientific Limited. Eric is the former chief technology officer at the Energy Systems Catapult and remains engaged with the Catapult as executive adviser. Eric became involved in the energy sector after having gained many years' experience in the telecommunications industry. He is a chartered engineer and a fellow of the IET.
